The song starts 28 seconds in.
Friend Jason Flower wondered if I’d recorded this song. I haven’t, but I did find a rough practice audio and here it is unedited.
Diana and I collaborated on most of ‘my’ songs. As I recollect, it was Diana who shared an image of a teacher drawing a circle on the blackboard and people standing on the circle. It next appeared as a WordPerfect doc and had morphed into a circle in sand and a girl who, for me, represents God. The song sat like that, an amorphous idea and not much more than a few rhymes on paper.
Years later Murray Maclaughlan invited me over to put our heads together on something. It was really an excuse to have a beer and recall old times. So, I drove over to his house and we talked Jeeps for a while. Then I showed him what I had, and we brainstormed. I came away with an identifiable song. But more than that and more than the delightful afternoon, I took away some valuable tips on writing that have stood me well over the years. Thank you, Murray.
I put Circle in the Sand to a melody and have sung it for friends, but never had the opportunity to include it in an album. I think this rendition was me putting down a track for accompanists to get the chords.
I think the song has promise and deserves to be sung.
